Chinese Long March 4B successfully launched two satellites from Taiyuan
Satellite Launching Center at 0150 UTC on May 15. Feng Yun 1D, a
weather satellite, and Haiyang 1, a marine surveying satellite
were launched into a polar orbit.
The
958 kg (2111 lbm) weather satellite is for the China Meteorological
Administration (CMA). Feng Yun 1D carries a 10-channel scanning
radiometer for the atmosphere and land and ocean observatories.
Feng Yun 1D will replace Feng Yun 1C, which is 1 year past its 2
year design life. Two Feng Yun 2 geostationary satellites are
planned for launch in 2003 and 2006, with two Feng Yun 3 polar
orbiting meteorological satellites scheduled for launch in 2005
and 2008. Feng Yun translates into English as “wind and
cloud.”
The
360 kg (793 lbm) Haiyang 1 is an ocean observation satellite for
the Chinese Space Technology Institute. It has a 2 year design
life.
