Astrium
to Build / Dnepr to Launch TerraSAR-X

Deutschen Zentrum
für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR – Germany Aerospace Center) has
selected Astrium to jointly develop TerraSAR-X, an X-band
Synthetic Aperture Radar observation spacecraft. DLR will invest
US$89.8 million (EURO 102 million), with Astrium investing US$24.6
million (EURO 28 million). The spacecraft will be launched on a
Dnepr in mid-2005. DLR will be in charge of science operations.
Astrium's InfoTerra GmbH will be responsible for commercial
operations.
Astrium
will build the 1023 kg (2255 lbm) spacecraft using the AstroBus
platform. The AstroBus combines elements of Matra Marconi
Space’s LeoStar and DASA’s Dornier Satellitensysteme FlexBus
platforms.
