Astrium to Build / Dnepr to Launch TerraSAR-X

Deutschen Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR – Germany Aerospace Center) has selected Astrium to jointly develop TerraSAR-X, an X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar observation spacecraft. DLR will invest US$89.8 million (EURO 102 million), with Astrium investing US$24.6 million (EURO 28 million). The spacecraft will be launched on a Dnepr in mid-2005. DLR will be in charge of science operations. Astrium's InfoTerra GmbH will be responsible for commercial operations.

Astrium will build the 1023 kg (2255 lbm) spacecraft using the AstroBus platform. The AstroBus combines elements of Matra Marconi Space’s LeoStar and DASA’s Dornier Satellitensysteme FlexBus platforms.
