Alcatel to Deliver Eutelsat W5 for Delta 4 Launch

Eutelsat signed a contract with Alcatel Space for the rapid delivery of Eutelsat W5. The satellite is the refurbished Eutelsat W1. Eutelsat W5 will be launched on the inaugural Delta IV flight currently scheduled for July 15. The satellite’s orbital position is still under review. Financial details have not been disclosed for either the satellite or launch.

The 3000+ kg (6012+ lbm) Eutelsat W5 uses the Spacebus 3000 platform. It will carry 34 Ku-band transponders. The satellite has a design life of 12 years, with an end-of-life power generation capability of 6.000 kW. The spacecraft will have two steerable spotbeams.

The spacecraft was originally designated Eutelsat W1, but in 1998 was damaged by a fire extinguishing system during payload testing in, then Aerospatiale's, Cannes satellite factory. (The satellite has also been referred to as the Wet One.) A US$50 million insurance claim was filed for its loss. The W1 name was later assigned to an Astrium satellite, which had initially been ordered as Ressat, and it was launched in September 2000. The replacement satellite built by Alcatel Space under the initial contract designated Eutelsat W1R, was eventually launched in March 2001, renamed, EuroBird.
