Teledesic LLC is
contracting with Alenia Spazio SpA to build two satellites for a
broadband communications MEO
satellite constellation. The contract only covers construction for
the first two satellites. Terms of the agreement with Alenia
Spazio, a unit of Finmeccanica SpA, were not disclosed.
Teledesic
announced a new satellite constellation design that can provide
commercial service with fewer satellites at a significantly
reduced cost. The new constellation design features 30
medium-Earth-orbit (MEO) satellites. The first 12 satellites will
allow the company to begin commercial service in several areas of
the world and are expected to cost less than US$1 billion. The
other 18 satellites will later enable the constellation to provide
full global coverage capacity. Teledesic is negotiating with
Alenia Spazio, and other satellite manufacturers for the remain
satellites.
