Ariane 42L Successfully Launches Indian INSAT 3C

After an early abort due to a countdown control computer alarm, an Araine 42L successfully launched the Indian INSAT 3C from Kourou, French Guiana, pad ELA-2, at 2300 UTC (1800 EST) on January 23.

INSAT 3C carries 24 C-band transponders, six extended C-band transponders, two S-band broadcast satellite service transponders and mobile satellite service transponders. Using its various types of transponders, the craft will provide telecommunications and television broadcast services to users across India. INSAT 3C is intended to continue the services of INSAT-2DT and INSAT-2C which are nearing their end of life.  INSAT-3C is the second satellite of the INSAT-3 series; the first satellite, INSAT-3B was launched in March 2000. Three additional satellites, INSAT-3A, INSAT-3D, and INSAT-3E, are planned to be launched under the INSAT-3 series in the near future.

The INSAT 3C was originally slotted to fly on an Ariane 5 with another payload, but the heavy-lift rocket was grounded and Arianespace shifted this satellite to an Ariane 4. The original Araine 4 launch, scheduled for January 16, was delayed to allow ISRO to conduct additional checks on the spacecraft in Kourou.
