Alcatel Space to Build Brazilian Satellite

Alcatel Space will build a new telecommunications satellite for Brazil’s Star One. The satellite will be delivered in 27 months, in early 2004. The spacecraft will be positioned in geosynchronous orbit at 67°W. The satellite is the first in Brazil’s C-series. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed. No details regarding launch vehicle selection were available.

Brasilsat C-1, based on an Alcatel SpaceBus 3000B3, will carry 44 high-power Ku-band transponders, providing multi-media and high-speed Internet capacity to South America.

Star One, Rio de Janeiro, formerly an Embratel business unit, was established in December 2000 and operates five Brasilsat satellites. Embratel holds 80% of Star One, while Société Européenne des Satellites (SES), Luxembourg, holds 20%.

In related news, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) cleared the way for SES to take control of GE American Communications Inc. (GE Americom). Antitrust authorities in Europe and the United States already have approved the deal. Under the terms of the acquisition announced in March 2001, SES will create a new company called SES Global, to be headquartered in Luxembourg. It will pay General Electric (GE) US$2.7 billion in cash and 15.4 million new SES Global shares for GE Americom, which is to become SES Americom. SES also holds stakes in several other satellite operators Asiasat, Star One, and NSAB.
