PanAmSat’s PAS
7 satellite suffered a sharp, and apparently permanent, loss
of power from its solar arrays on September 6, as it came out of
eclipse. The Loral LS 1300 satellite, had a short circuit of its
solar cells. The satellite is likely to soon be declared a total
loss. An insurance claim worth US$253 million is expected to be
filed. PAS 7 was launched by Arianespace in September 1998 and
expected to last through 2013. The satellite has lost more than
20-22% of its electric power.
Loral earlier
this year had reported 11 LS 1300 satellites in orbit could be
affected by a short circuit in their solar-cell arrays. Until the
PAS 7 failure, none of the satellites had suffered more than a
slight degradation of solar power, and none have reported a loss
of revenue-generating capability. No insurance claims have yet
been filed.
