Soyuz
Launches Reconnaissance Satellite From Plesetsk
A
Soyuz U successfully launched Kosmos 2377 from Plesetsk Cosmodrome,
pad LC43/4, at 1755 UTC (10:55 am PDT) on May 29. The classified
satellite was launched into a 176 x 382 km (95 x 206 nmi) orbit, inclined
at 67.1 degrees. Jonathon’s Space Report comments that this
orbit is typical of Yantar class reconnaissance satellites. This
generation of Yantar spacecraft, possibly called Kobal’t,
carries a large recoverable capsule containing the camera system
and film, as well as two small film capsules which would be
returned during the mission. The spacecraft will likely remain in
orbit for about 120 days which would lead to a landing around
September 26.
