Proton Launches PAS 10 to Replace PAS 4

A Proton K/DM3 launched PAS 10 from Baikonur Cosmodrome, LC 81, pad 23, at 0111 UTC on May 15 (6:11 pm PDT May 14). International Launch Services (ILS), a joint venture between Lockheed Martin and Khrunichev brokered the launch. PAS 10 will be positioned at 68.5°E, over the Indian Ocean. The satellite will replace PAS 4 which lost its primary SCP in November 1998 and has since been running on its backup processor. Should that remaining SCP malfunction, the satellite would be a total loss.

The 3772 kg (8324 lbm) Boeing build BSS 601HP has an expected life of 15 years, with an 9600 watt EOL power. It carries 24 C-band transponders powered by 55-watt traveling wave tube amplifiers (TWTAs), and 24 Ku-band transponders, powered by 98-watt TWTAs. The satellite will serve customers in a 30 million-square-mile area in Africea, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Among its expected users are BBC, CNN, CCTV, Discovery, ESPN, MTV, NHK, Nickelodeon and TNT. PAS 10 will be the 23rd satellite in the PanAmSat Corp. constellation.
