Loral
Wins DirecTV 7S Contract
DirecTV Inc., on
April 19, awarded a contract to Space Systems/Loral
to build a satellite for the direct-to-home
broadcaster. The new Ku-band spacecraft, DirecTV 7S, will feature
spot beams designed to transmit local television channels to
targeted regions.
Loral’s
selection is the first time DirecTV has bought a spacecraft from
a company other than Boeing Satellite Systems. Until October 2000,
Boeing’s satellite unit was part of Hughes Electronics Corp.,
DirecTV’s corporate parent.
