Boeing announced
that two BSS 702 satellites, ordered earlier by Hughes Spaceway,
would be launched in 2002 and 2003. The 6000 kg (13, 288 lbm)
satellites will be launched by Sea Launch’s Zenit 3SL. The
contract with Sea Launch is a ‘delivery-in-orbit’ contract,
meaning BSS delivers the satellites and provides launch
arrangements, followed by extensive in-orbit testing prior to
final customer acceptance. These Ka-band satellites will be used
for high-speed broadband internet access in North America.
Spaceway has
reiterated its commitment to buy six more Boeing satellites for
commercial use over Asia and Europe.
The Spaceway
system is expected to cost US$1.4 billion to build and deploy. The
satellites will be operated by Hughes Network Services (HNS),
Germantown, Maryland, a unit of Hughes Electronics Corp., which is
a subsidiary of General Motors Corp.
The
Boeing Company owns 40% of Sea Launch Co. LLC, Long Beach, Ca.
