Ariane Launches Two European Military Satellites

An Ariane 44L successfully launched two European military satellites from Centre Spatial Guyanais (CSG), Kourou, pad ELA 2, at 2306 UTC (3:06 p.m. PST) on February 7. The Italian Sicral 1 will be located at 16.2°E. Skynet 4F will be located at either 1°W or 6°E.

The Italian Sicral 1 spacecraft will provide space-based communications for the Italian Ministry of Defense, using 9 SHF, UHF and EHF Band transponders. The 2596 kg (5711lbm) satellite was built by Alenia Spazio which provided the satellite bus, FiatAvio which manufactured the propulsion system, and Telespazio who has provided the ground segment. The spacecraft is designed to operate for 10 years. Beginning of life power is 3.280 kW. The stowed dimensions of the satellite are 2.79 m x 3.43 m x 4.93 m (9.2 ft x 11.3 ft x 16.2 ft).

The 1489 kg (3276 lbm) Skynet 4F was built by Astrium for the British Ministry of Defense. The satellite is equipped with 8 transponders (4 SHF, 2 UHF and 2 S Band transponders) and has a design life of 8 years. Beginning of life power is 2.000 kW. The stowed dimensions of the satellite are 1.45 m x 1.76 m x 1.91 m (4.8 ft x 5.8 ft x 6.3 ft).
