Launch Soyuz For Flight To Mir
|
 A Soyuz U rocket carrying the Soyuz TM-30 spacecraft
successfully lifted off from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at
10:01 pm PDT April 3 (0501 UTC April 4) into an initial orbit of
193 km by 235 km at 51.6°. The Soyuz spacecraft will spend two
days in orbit, executing additional thruster firings, to catch up
with Mir before docking with the station early April 6. While no
launch mass was announced for the Soyuz TM spacecraft, past
history would indicate it massed 7150 kg. Cosmonauts, commander
Sergei Zaletin and flight engineer Alexander Kaleri, will spend at
least 45 days on Mir, and possibly stay as long as 60 days.
The mission is funded in part by MirCorp, Utrecht,
which has leased Mir for commercial use. Shareholders in MirCorp
include RSC Energia and venture capital firms. The lead investor
is the venture capital firm of Gold & Appel. RSC Energia is
the majority shareholder in MirCorp.
