Loral
Awarded Contract to Build Satmex 6
Satmex
plans to invest US$300 million to build a new satellite, Satmex 6.
Construction of Satmex 6 will begin in the coming weeks, with
launch planned for as soon as the construction is completed
in early 2003. The satellite will be constructed by Space Systems
/ Loral. Loral Space & Communications Ltd. owns a 49 percent
stake in Satmex. Principia and the Mexican government own the
remainder of Satmex in almost equal parts.
Satmex was
prompted to moving quickly to put a new satellite into orbit after
the August failure of Solidaridad 1. Satmex switched off the
Hughes built HS 601 permanently, after attempts to reestablish communication
with its central processors repeatedly failed. Solidaridad 1 was
insured for US$250 million. The proceeds of the insurance claim
are being used toward the construction and launch of a replacement
satellite. Satmex currently has three active satellites:
Solidaridad 2, Satmex 5 and Morelos 2.
