SES Orders Astra 3A
From Boeing to Serve Deutsche Telekom German Markets

Européenne des Satellites S.A. (SES) has placed an order with
Boeing Satellite Systems Inc. (formerly Hughes Space and
Communications), El Segundo, California for a new satellite, Astra
3A, with a planned launched in Q1 2002 to be
located at 23.5°E. Deutsche Telekom AG will utilize transponders
on Astra 3A in order to continue DFS Kopernikus' existing cable TV
feeds as well as to offer additional broadband communications. The
remaining Astra 3A capacity will be commercialized by SES, mainly
for Internet and broadband services targeting the German language
markets. No financial details were released. No launch provider
has been selected.
Astra
3A will be a Boeing 376HP spin-stabilized satellite configured
with 20 active Ku-band transponders (21 at beginning of life) with
a bandwidth of 36 MHz in the DFS Kopernikus frequency range 11.45
- 11.70 and 12.50 - 12.75 GHz. The spacecraft is to have a minimum
design life of 10 years in orbit and feature a footprint optimized
for DTH reception (direct-to-home) in Germany, Austria and
Switzerland. The satellite will provide follow-on capacity for
Deutsche Telekom's DFS 1 Kopernikus 3 satellite. This satellite
will implement the DFS-Kopernikus follow-on under German ITU
filings.
