Launches NSAT 110 For Two Japanese Companies

An Ariane 42L
successfully launched NSAT 110 at 2300 UTC (4 p.m. PDT) October 5
from Kourou, pad ELA 2. The satellite will be positioned in
geostationary orbit at 110°E. The satellite is expected to enter
service in mid-November, having an expected design life of 15
years. NSAT 110 is also known as Superbird 5.
The
3,531 kg (7,768 lbm) satellite was built by Lockheed Martin
Commercial Space Systems, Sunnyvale, CA, for Space Communications
Corporation (SCC) and Japan Satellite Systems, Inc. (JSAT). The
two firms will jointly use the satellite. Based upon Lockheed
Martin's A2100AX-model bus, the satellite carries 24 Ku-band
transponders that will be used to provide direct television
broadcasting, internet and data transmission services to Japan.
