Ariane Launches NSAT 110 For Two Japanese Companies

An Ariane 42L successfully launched NSAT 110 at 2300 UTC (4 p.m. PDT) October 5 from Kourou, pad ELA 2. The satellite will be positioned in geostationary orbit at 110°E. The satellite is expected to enter service in mid-November, having an expected design life of 15 years. NSAT 110 is also known as Superbird 5.

The 3,531 kg (7,768 lbm) satellite was built by Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems, Sunnyvale, CA, for Space Communications Corporation (SCC) and Japan Satellite Systems, Inc. (JSAT). The two firms will jointly use the satellite. Based upon Lockheed Martin's A2100AX-model bus, the satellite carries 24 Ku-band transponders that will be used to provide direct television broadcasting, internet and data transmission services to Japan.
