Ariane Launches Astra and GE Satellites

More Information:

An Ariane 5, carrying two satellites, successfully launched from Kourou’s ELA 3 pad at 2254 UTC (3:54 p.m. PDT) on September 14. Flight 130 (Ariane 506) was carrying Astra 2B and GE 7.

Astra 2B was built by Astrium, Toulouse, based on a Eurostar 2000+ bus, to be positioned at 28.2°E, over central Africa. Société Européenne des Satellites (SES), Luxembourg owns and will operate the satellite. Astra 2B, with 30 Ku-band transponders, will provide radio, digital television, multimedia, and internet services to customers in Europe. The 3315 kg (7293 lbm) satellite has an expected 15 year lifetime.

GE 7 was manufactured by Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems, Sunnyvale, and will be located at the 137°W orbital slot over the Pacific Ocean. Based on Lockheed Martin's A2100 design, GE 7 weighed 1935 kg (4362 lbm) at launch and has a planned 15 year life. GE 7, owned and operated by GE Americom, will provide telecommunication services using 24 C-band transponders to the United States and parts of the Caribbean. Such services will include providing cable operators with regional and national video distribution, internet, and radio services. GE 7 replaces the Satcom C1 satellite.
