An Ariane 5,
carrying two satellites, successfully launched from Kourou’s ELA
3 pad at 2254 UTC (3:54 p.m. PDT) on September 14. Flight 130
(Ariane 506) was carrying Astra 2B and GE 7.
Astra
2B was built by Astrium, Toulouse, based on a Eurostar 2000+ bus,
to be positioned at
28.2°E, over central Africa.
Société Européenne des Satellites (SES), Luxembourg owns and
will operate the satellite. Astra 2B, with 30 Ku-band
transponders, will provide radio, digital television, multimedia,
and internet services to customers in Europe. The 3315 kg (7293
lbm) satellite has an expected 15 year lifetime.
GE
7 was manufactured by Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems,
Sunnyvale, and will be located at the 137°W
orbital slot over the Pacific Ocean. Based on Lockheed Martin's
A2100 design, GE 7 weighed 1935 kg (4362 lbm) at launch and has a
planned 15 year life. GE 7, owned and operated by GE Americom,
will provide telecommunication services using 24 C-band
transponders to the United States and parts of the Caribbean. Such
services will include providing cable operators with regional and
national video distribution, internet, and radio services. GE 7
replaces the Satcom C1 satellite.
