A Kosmos 3M
launched CHAMP, MITA and RUBIN from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome
at 5:00 a.m. PDT (1200 UTC) on July 15. The satellites were
launched into a 421 x 476 km orbit, inclined at 87.3
degrees.
CHAMP (CHAllenging
Microsatellite Payload) is a German geophysics research
minisatellite operated by GeoForschungsZentrum, Potsdam. The 522
kg (1148.4 lbm) satellite was built by Dornier Satellitensysteme
(now part of Astrium), and has a five year expected life.
MITA (Microsatellite
