MacDonald Dettwiler has selected
Boeing Delta Launch Services as their launch services contractor
to use the Delta II to launch Radarsat 2 in April 2003 from
Vandenberg Air Force Base, CA. Once operational the synthetic
aperture radar (SAR) satellite will provide data users with
24-hour, all-weather image acquisition capabilities with a
resolution of three meters.
MacDonald
Dettwiler is the prime contractor for Radarsat 2 and is under
agreement with the Canadian Space Agency to develop, build,
integrate and launch Radarsat 2, a follow-on program to Radarsat
1. Once operational, Radarsat 2 will be wholly owned and operated
by MacDonald Dettwiler, through it’s wholly owned subsidiary,
Radarsat International. In return for its investment in design,
deployment and operation of Radarsat 2, Canadian government
departments and agencies will receive access to satellite imaging.
The
satellite mass is expected to be 2,600 kg (5,720 lbm), and to
orbit at 798 km (431 nmi) at 98.6 degrees, sun-synchronous.
