Hughes and Arianespace have signed contracts with
JSAT Corporation (formerly Japan Satellite Systems, Inc. (JSAT))
to build and launch the JCSAT-8 telecommunication satellite.
JCSAT-8 will be an HS 601 platform to be manufactured by Hughes
Space & Communications Company. The new satellite will carry
16 C-band transponders and 16 Ku-band transponders and will
provide coverage to Japan, East Asia, Australia and Hawaii. It will be launched by an
Ariane 4 or Ariane 5. JCSAT-8 will replace JCSAT-2. JCSAT-2 is
currently positioned at 154°E.
The satellite is scheduled for
launch in late 2001.
