An
Ariane 42L launch vehicle successfully launched PanAmSat’s
Galaxy 4R from pad ELA 2 at Centre Spatial Guyanais,
Kourou on April 18 at 5:29
p.m. PDT (0139 UTC April 19). The 3,668 kg (8,088 lbm) Hughes
built HS 601HP satellite carries 28 C-band and 28 Ku-band
transponders. The geostationary satellite will be located at 99°W,
with a design life of 15 years. At launch the satellite envelope
measured 4.00
x 3.60 x 2.70 m, deploying antennas and arrays on-orbit to 26 m. The
8.7 kW (end-of-life power) spacecraft replaces the
Galaxy 4 satellite which malfunctioned in 1998, shutting down
pagers and tens of thousands of other users.
