Hopkins was hired as Lead Market Research Analyst for Andrews Space
& Technology in February 2000 having completed 20 years service
with the Boeing Company.
For
the past five years at Boeing he conducted market research for
projects which ranged across Boeing’s commercial space product lines
and concepts, including: X-33/RLV (McDonnell Douglas/Boeing team),
Delta, Sea Launch, AirLaunch, Reusable Space Systems, Space
Maneuvering Vehicle, Orbital Systems and Services, Satellite Transfer

narrowband, remote sensing - Resource 21), as well as contributing to
the 1998/9 NASA Space Transportation Architecture Study (STAS). One of
his responsibilities was to track and coordinate the business use and
needs of spectrum/frequency. He frequently participated
in very ‘short-fused’ studies and presentations for his management to
use in presentations to Boeing executives at the CEO and Board of
Directors level.
Mr.

“International Reference Guide to Space Launch Systems”, 3rd
edition, and expects to serve as co-editor of the 4th
edition, which should be published in 2003. He has recently proposed
to AIAA that he edit a companion reference, which has the working
title, “International Reference Guide to Commercial Satellite
Busses”, with an expected publication date of 2002.
From
1996 to1999 Mr. Hopkins developed annual forecasts of the GSO
telecommunication market for Boeing, the summary results of which were
provided to the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Commercial
Space Transportation Advisory Committee (COMSTAC) Space Technology and
Innovation Working Group. He served as the technical editor for the
“1998 COMSTAC GEO Forecast Update”. He continues his participation
on the Working Group representing the interests of Andrews Space &
Technology. In addition to the GSO forecasts, while at Boeing Mr.
Hopkins was involved in the forecasting and assessment of the NGSO
telecommunication and remote sensing markets, as well as surveys and
assessment of civil satellites worldwide.
For
the past few years, he edited a weekly internal report for Boeing
summarizing the activities of the global launch, satellite and
spaceport market, in the context of Boeing’s short- and long-term
business interests and products. He continues those assessments for
Andrews Space & Technology with the recent commencement of the
SPACEandTECH Digest and SPACEandTECH Flash! services. In
addition, Mr. Hopkins is Editor of the AST database on the www.spaceandtech.com
website.
Mr.
Hopkins was educated at the University of Missouri-Rolla, receiving
his Computer Science B.S. in 1976. He continued postgraduate studies
in Environmental Planning Engineering. At Boeing he participated in both on and
off-hours courses in Airline Marketing, the knowledge of which he has
since been applying to the business development of commercial space
products.
